“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him…”

Psalm 103:17

THIS WEEK, WE CONTINUE to consider the glorious attributes of God as they relate to the gospel, and one such attribute that is absolutely crucial to our salvation is His mercy.

God’s mercy is closely related to His grace, but they are not identical. Some would distinguish them in this way: “God is gracious when He gives us what we don’t deserve; He is merciful when He doesn’t give us what we do deserve.” Because of our sin, what we do deserve is God’s wrath and judgment, but those who “fear Him” (Ps 103:17 above) instead receive mercy. And what does it mean to “fear Him”? It means to recognize our sinfulness and look to Christ in faith and repentance.

Psalm 103:17 also speaks of the greatness of God’s mercy, that it is “from everlasting to everlasting”. It is unending. Likewise, Psalm 145:11 says that the Lord is “slow to anger and great in mercy”. His mercy is infinite in depth. Therefore, as we love to sing at CFBC, “Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more!” Come to Christ today. Trust in Him alone, and no matter what your past may be, you may know God’s mercy, grace and forgiveness.
