“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.”
Psalm 136:1
LAST WEEK IN THIS SPACE, we considered a very important attribute of God: His holiness. And for the next few weeks, I wish to continue to look at various characteristics of God and how they relate to the gospel.
There is a Hebrew word that we read repeatedly in the Old Testament, and that is translated using different English words such as mercy and lovingkindness, but also “steadfast love”. We recognize there are different types of love–brotherly love, romantic love–but the type of love spoken of by this Hebrew word is just that: it is steadfast. It is used frequently in the Old Testament to describe God’s love towards His covenant people, Israel. It is a faithful love, a love of covenant. Truly, a steadfast love.
Similarly, the New Testament describes God’s faithful love towards the believer in Jesus Christ as a steadfast love, an enduring love. It is faithful and enduring because it doesn’t depend on us; it depends on God. His love is unbreakable towards all those who trust in Christ for salvation. Thus, in Romans 8:38-39, the apostle Paul says of that love of God towards the believer, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Come to Christ today and know God’s faithful, enduring, and steadfast love.
