“... and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead”.
Romans 1:4
IN OUR MODERN, TECHNOLOGICAL WORLD, science and engineering have done much to harness and utilize the powerful forces that exist within nature, forces that the creative hand of God has placed there. But no power in nature comes close to the miraculous power that was displayed at a rocky tomb just outside the city of Jerusalem almost 2000 years ago. For there, one Sunday morning, death itself was overturned as Jesus Christ rose from the grave.
And as He did so, Romans 1:4 tells us that He was “declared to be the Son of God with power”. The power of the resurrection showed Him to be the Son of God. God Himself, come in the flesh.
And He came for that very purpose: to purchase salvation on the cross and to rise again, conquering death. His death on the cross purchased salvation for all who believe, as there on the cross, our sin was laid on Him, and the punishment for our sin was poured out on Him. And then, in His resurrection, not only did He rise from the grave, but in so doing He conquered death for us, for all who will come to Him by faith. Thus, the one who trusts in Christ may say with Paul in I Corinthians 15:54b, “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
