“My times are in Your hand”. Psalm 31:15a
Back at the end of September, I dutifully had my snow tires put on our car. And now (at least at the time of my writing this), eight weeks later, still no snow to speak of. But we know it’s coming.
Nobody enjoys the sensation of losing control of a car when we hit an icy patch on the road. In fact, in all situations of life, we want to feel like we are in control. But the psalmist in Psalm 31:15 reminds himself–and us–that “My times are in your hand”. We do not choose the day on which we are born, nor the setting into which we are born. And we do not choose the time when death takes us from this world. Ultimately, whatever comes into our lives does so in accordance with our sovereign God’s will and purposes.
Though some may react to such a thought with concern, nonetheless, the believer–the one trusting in Christ alone for salvation–draws great comfort in the truth that God is in control of our lives, not we ourselves. Psalm 31 overflows with trust in God, for we are also told there of God’s goodness (:19) and His kindness (:21). Thus, we hope in the Lord (:24), knowing He will preserve His people (:23), and that no matter what comes our way in this life, God will bring us to that eternal day spent in His presence.
