“And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” I John 2:17
So many go through life assuming things will continue from one day to the next without change. One day moves to the next. The Earth continues on its course. One year moves to another. On and on it goes.
But Scripture says that is not so. The universe is not like the Energizer Bunny, moving along without end. Rather, there is an end, and God is ever moving all things towards their appointed end, the end which He has appointed.
For when the apostle John writes in I John 2:17 that “the world is passing away”, he speaks of the physical world, but also of something more. He says that “the lust of it” is also passing away. Not only this physical world, but this fallen, sinful world, this world which is in rebellion against its Creator.
But wonderfully, John goes on to point out that not all will pass away. “But he who does the will of God abides forever.” The one who does the will of God is the one who turns from this world and turns to Christ. It is the will of God that we, in faith and repentance, turn to Christ, trusting in Him alone for salvation. And that one, Scripture says, will not pass away, but instead live forever. And will do so in “A New Heaven and A New Earth” (Revelation 21:1), in the very presence of God.
