“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63b

In John 6, Jesus performs a great miracle—the only one recorded in all four Gospels—when He feeds 5000 men using five loaves and two fish. And in John’s Gospel, the miracle is followed by a lengthy discussion between Jesus and the Jews, where Jesus proclaims that He is the “Bread of Life”. He Himself is not “food which perishes”, like loaves and fish, but “food which endures to everlasting life”.

At the end of the chapter, Jesus then turns to His disciples and offers further teaching to them. He says, The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” What does He mean?

He means this… Throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry, He “went about… preaching the gospel of the kingdom” (Matthew 4:23). Jesus’ words were gospel words and thus, they were “spirit and life”. They were “spirit” because the Holy Spirit uses God’s word, the Scriptures, to convict, change hearts and draw people to salvation in Christ. And Jesus’ words are therefore also “life” because those who receive His words are granted eternal life in Christ.

So, hear Jesus today; hear God’s word today. And by hearing and believing His words, and by embracing through faith the One who spoke the words, LIVE!
