“Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.” Isaiah 55:2

Probably each one of us at one time or another has made a purchase only to find that the item falls far short of our expectations. When the purchase is a minor one, we can chalk it up to experience, learn our lesson and walk away. But if it is a major purchase where we have invested a great deal and the item proves useless, the effect can be devastating. History is filled with examples of those who invested all into something that, in the end, proved worthless.

The prophet Isaiah uses the metaphor of buying bread. He presents the situation of one who pays money to purchase the food, but it turns out to be anything but bread. It brings no satisfaction.

Isaiah’s point is, of course, not about food, bread and grocery stores but about the spiritual realm. He is speaking to Old Testament Israel, but the tragic reality of which he speaks is just as applicable today. So many people invest not simply money but their lives in things that, in the end, do not bring any satisfaction. For there is only One who satisfies: Christ. In Him alone is to be found all that our hearts truly desire: peace, joy, forgiveness, and eternal life. So come to Him, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.
