“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6
During this past week as I prepared my piece for this space, I was surprised to realize that I had never written concerning this verse: John 14:6. And my surprise stemmed from the fact that these are very remarkable words.
In John 14, Jesus meets with His disciples in the Upper Room, not long before His crucifixion, offering final words and instructions. And in so doing, He makes a bold and amazing declaration, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Positively, Jesus says that He does not just speak truth, but He IS the truth; He is truth incarnate. And He is the life. Again, not only does Jesus offer life–eternal life–but He IS the life. This will be seen clearly only a few days hence when He walks out of the grave, having conquered death in His resurrection. And He IS the way; Jesus is the way to God, the way to eternal life, the way to salvation.
But also, we must consider this declaration negatively because of what Jesus says next. “No one comes to the Father EXCEPT through Me.” Jesus refutes here that which some claim even today, that all roads lead to God. There are not 100 ways, there are not even 2 ways. There is one way only to God and life, and that way is Jesus. But praise God, there IS a way and that one way is Christ. So come to Him by faith today, to Him who is “the way, the truth, and the life”.
