“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

Ephesians 5:8

 

ONE OF THE MOST VIVID and powerful word-pictures or metaphors used within Scripture is that of light and darkness. This metaphor is used throughout Scripture, including a most dramatic usage when Jesus declared that He is the “Light of the World” (John 8:12; 9:5). Also, in our text this week, from Ephesians 5:8, Paul says, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” That is, those who follow the “Light of the world” are themselves “children of light”.

There are many more references in Scripture to light and darkness, with many different nuances being portrayed by the word “light”. But certainly, one aspect of “light” within Scripture is: revelation. And along with that, the ability to “see” and understand. That is, the believer—through the light of Scripture and through Jesus, the “Light of the world”- has been granted understanding. Understanding of their sinful state, and thus, their need for a Saviour. Understanding of Christ’s provision of salvation on the cross. Understanding that He has conquered death in His resurrection and, by that, granted eternal life to all who will believe. And so, I urge you to come out of the darkness to the One who is the Light, and “walk as children of light”.
