“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”
Colossians 1:15
WHAT IS GOD LIKE? God is Spirit (John 4:24), and is, of course, not visible to our eyes. But God has revealed Himself in His word–the Scriptures–and we can learn of Him there. And furthermore, God is revealed in Jesus Christ, who walked this earth.
The apostle Paul says it this way in Colossians 1:15, “He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God”. Jesus was–and is–the God-Man; He was–and is–“truly God and truly man”, as the creed says. And therefore, we understand who God is by looking at Jesus.
But also, Paul says that Christ is “the firstborn over all creation”. First, what this is not saying: Paul is not saying that Christ was the first one to be created by God the Father, for Christ is God and thus, eternal. No, Christ is the “firstborn” in that He has the place of supreme honour over all creation.
Now, of course, these are not easy thoughts to grab hold of, but don’t miss the point. This One who is God Himself, who is co-eternal with God the Father, who is supreme over all creation, this One humbled Himself not only to enter into His creation, but to die on the cross for a creation in rebellion against Him. What love! What grace! What mercy! What a glorious salvation comes to all who will come to Christ by faith.
