“But Jesus answered him, saying, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” Luke 4:4

EACH ONE OF US—every day—desires food on the table. And for that, we may work at a job to earn the money for our food. Then we go to the grocery store to purchase the food. Then we take the time to cook and prepare the meal. We go to all this effort because food is necessary for life.

But food is also necessary for spiritual life, and that food is the word of God. First, God’s word is required for one to gain spiritual life. The apostle Paul tells us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:23). And the apostle Peter says in I Peter 2:24, we are “born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God”. To be “born again”—that is, to be granted spiritual life in Christ—takes place as the Holy Spirit applies God’s word to our hearts, convicting us of our need, and helping us understand that we may receive that gift of spiritual life through faith in Christ. And second, we are nourished in our Christian life through a steady diet of Scripture.

Therefore, I urge you to pick up a Bible and READ. Perhaps begin with the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which tell us of Jesus, His teachings and the salvation that is in Him. And pray as you read, asking that the Holy Spirit would help you to see the glorious new life that is in Christ.
