“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33

IN THIS SECTION of Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount”, He speaks regarding the practicalities of life, such as food and clothing. He says in Matthew 6:25, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on”. Of course, food and clothing are necessities, and we must do such practical tasks as earn a pay cheque, go to the store to buy food and clothes, and cook our dinner daily. That’s just part of daily life, and Jesus is not suggesting anything different.

But what He is warning against is being consumed by these things. Worrying about them. Letting the things of this world take over our minds and hearts. For there is only one thing that is of supreme importance: the kingdom of God.

For that reason, later in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus compares the kingdom to “a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44). Therefore, do not set your hearts on that which does not satisfy, that which ultimately is of no value, that which is temporal. Instead, look to that which eternally satisfies, that which is of infinite value: Christ and His kingdom.
