For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse”.

Romans 1:20

HERE IN OUR BEAUTIFUL PART of the world, whether one is looking out over a lake surrounded by forest, considering the Rocky Mountain peaks shortly before sunset, or gazing up at a star-filled night sky, there is one universal response to it all: awe. The apostle Paul says, in Romans 1 above, that as we view the created realm, we also have revealed to us, not only the existence of God but “His invisible attributes, ... even His eternal power and Godhead”.

But it is what comes next in Romans 1:20 that is perhaps most striking: “… so that they are without excuse”.

The atheist philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russel was once asked what he would say when he stood before God, and he replied, “I will say, ‘You didn’t give me enough evidence’ ”. But no, according to the apostle Paul, no one who stands before God—as we all will—will be able to say that. For each one of us views the creation and can thus know of the Creator God. Instead, the only one who will boldly and with confidence stand before God is the one who has, in this life, looked by faith to Christ and is thus welcomed as a child into the presence of their Creator… and heavenly Father.
