“For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water” Jeremiah 2:13
THE PROPHET JEREMIAH, in Jer 2:13 above, presents a picture of such folly that it would be laughable if it were not also an accurate description of his day. He writes of God’s people, Old Testament Israel, as having turned away from a fountain of life-giving water (God) to cisterns that are broken (idols) and thus unable to do the one thing a cistern needs to do: hold water. That is, in the metaphor, the people choose thirst when a fountain of water is available.
Such foolishness is almost unimaginable, but sadly, such thinking was not only the way in Jeremiah’s day, but it is so today as well. Even so, today, people turn their backs on God, who offers abundant life in Him, and instead look to the false gods of this world. Of course, these false gods are not idols made of stone or wood but are the “gods” of wealth, success, pleasure and prosperity. But in reality, they are “broken cisterns that hold no water”.
Therefore, learn the lesson of Jeremiah 2:13. There is a fountain of living water, and His name is Christ. Come, and drink from Him. He alone will quench your thirst and give life.
