“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” Psalm 1:3
THE QUOTATION OF PSALM 1:3 ABOVE begs an all-important question, doesn’t it? “Who is this man?” The description draws us in. He is like a tree with deep roots. He continually receives life-giving water. His life is fruitful, not barren. He is stable; even in difficulty, he does not wilt. And he prospers in all his ways. Again, who is this man?
The previous verse in Psalm 1 gives us the answer. He is the one whose “delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night”.
He “walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful”. In other words, he is not tuned in to the nonsense messages of this world. Rather, he is deeply into God’s word, the Scriptures. There he draws nourishment. There he obtains wise instruction, counsel and direction for life. Most importantly, there he finds salvation and eternal life, for there he finds Christ.
At the beginning of another year, I urge you to “resolve” one thing: that you would “plant” yourself in the Scriptures. There you will be directed to Christ and the flourishing, abundant and eternal life that is in Him.
